“Stand firm therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness” (Eph. 6:14).
The final repetition of “stand firm” may be intended to underline the believer’s ability to stand firm when they take up the full armor of God. It is the armor and power of God which enables us to live a victorious Christian life.
The translation “having girded your loins with truth” accurately conveys the sense of a deliberate personal action. God provides the armor but the believer has the responsibility for daily donning that armor.
The order in which the armor is described is the order in which a Roman soldier would have put them on. The girdle is not actually a piece of armor, but it is the undergarment which binds all other pieces together. The idea of “girding” is often used in the Bible because it was an essentially preparatory action for a person who would run a race or go to battle in the long flowing garments worn in biblical days.
So what is the girdle that provides the foundation for the other pieces of armor? It is “truth” in the sense of integrity, the unalloyed commitment to Christ. The Psalmist speaks of desiring truth in the “innermost being” (Ps. 51:6). As the girdle removes the folds of the long flowing gown and provides unimpeded movement, so perfect sincerity of heart provides the foundation for God’s full armor.
Prayer: With the Psalmist I cry out for truth in my innermost being. Amen.
