Prince of Peace

Friday, January 1st, 2010

I grew up in an era marked by the peace symbol, a time when the Vietnam War polarized the nation.  Peace was elusive then and it seems to be more so today.  Terrorists have redefined and every time you fly you are reminded about the terrorist threat.  Will our children or grandchildren every know peace?

We return once again to the promise of Isaiah 9:6.  All the names mentioned in this verse find their climax in the great affirmation—“Prince of Peace.”  To these people living in deep despair, God promised to shatter the burdensome yoke of their oppressors.  No promise of peace could be more vivid than that described in verse 5.  “For the trampling boot of battle and the bloodied garments of war will be burned as fuel for the fire.”

But the peace promised by God is more than the cessation of strife.  It is a life of personal well-being and hope—of salvation, blessing, happiness, and fullness.  The implications are spelled out in verse 7.  “The dominion will be vast, and its prosperity will never end.  He will reign on the throne of David and over His kingdom to establish and sustain it with justice and righteousness from now on and forever.  The zeal of the Lord of Hosts will accomplish this.”

Those who know the Prince of Peace have the privilege and responsibility of joining Him as He extends His reign to all nations.  Tell someone today about the Prince of Peace.

Prayer:  Thank You for the peace you have given me.  Let me share that peace with a friend today.   Amen
